Stop and check
For when someone — a message, a call, a new friend online — asks for something they should not have.
- Tap what they asked for, for example A code (OTP).
- The card says STOP. Show a trusted adult. and the rule for that: never tell anyone a code.
- Show the card, and the message, to a trusted adult.
- No adult near? The card says to call 1799, the ScamShield Helpline. It is free and open all day and night.
- Turn around turns the card for the person opposite. Speak reads it out (if it is on, on the set-up page).
- Nothing is saved: not what was tapped, nor when.
For adults: practise it together before it is
needed — "Someone sends a message: you won a prize, send a code to get
it. What do you tap?" The police, banks and the government never ask
for a code, a password or a money transfer by phone or message.
